The Passeggiata del Gianicolo is a series of avenues lined with plane trees that wind their way up the Janiculum Hill. This route is marked by dozens of marble busts depicting the soldiers and officers who fought for the short-lived Roman Republic in eighteen forty-nine. After the Italian state acquired the hill in eighteen eighty-three, it transformed the area into a public memorial to those who died defending the city against French forces.
