The Church of San Francesco della Vigna is recognizable by its grand white stone facade, designed by Andrea Palladio, which features massive Corinthian columns set upon high plinths. This church in the Castello district takes its name from the fertile vineyards that once covered this northern edge of the city. In twelve fifty-three, the nobleman Marco Ziani bequeathed this land, along with a small church and houses, to the Franciscan Friars Minor.
