Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

religious

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is recognizable by the vermilion-painted main pavilion and the presence of numerous stone ox statues resting throughout the grounds. This site serves as the final resting place of Sugawara no Michizane, a ninth-century courtier and scholar who was exiled here from Kyoto after falling victim to political slander. He passed away in nine hundred three, and his burial site became a place of deep reverence.
