Nanzo-in Temple is defined by a colossal, forty-one-meter-long bronze statue of a reclining Buddha that stretches across the hillside. Known as the Nehanzo, this figure portrays the Buddha at the moment of his death and entry into nirvana. Weighing three hundred tons, it is often cited as one of the largest bronze statues in the world. The interior of the statue houses sacred ashes of the Buddha and two of his disciples, which were gifted by the Buddhist Congress of Myanmar in nineteen eighty-eight to honor the temple’s humanitarian aid work in Southeast Asia and Nepal.
