Hokkaido Jingu is identified by the forest of Maruyama Park, which surrounds its expansive, eighteen-hectare sanctuary. Established in eighteen sixty-nine by order of Emperor Meiji, the site was created to enshrine three pioneering deities tasked with protecting the island’s early settlers as they cleared the wilderness. Originally named Sapporo Jinja, it moved to its current location in eighteen seventy-one, serving as the spiritual focal point for the region’s development.
