Ohiradai Station is defined by the switchback mechanism that allows trains to navigate the steep, forested mountains of Hakone. Because the slope is too severe for a direct ascent, the track is laid out in a zigzag pattern. When a train pulls into this station, it stops at a siding, and the driver and conductor swap positions between the front and rear of the cars to reverse the train's direction for the next leg of the climb.
