Shimogamo Shrine

religious

Shimogamo Shrine, formally known as Kamomioya Shrine, is identified by the ancient Tadasu no Mori forest that envelops its grounds, acting as a green barrier between the complex and the city. As one of the oldest Shinto sites in Kyoto, dating back to the sixth century, it was established at the confluence of the Kamo and Takano rivers to protect the capital from malign influences. The shrine is a designated World Heritage site, centered on the worship of Kamo Taketsunomi no Mikoto and his daughter, Tamayorihime no Mikoto.
