The most recognizable feature of Byōdō-in is the Phoenix Hall, which appears to hover above the surrounding pond with the symmetrical grace of a bird in flight. Its distinctive profile, defined by a central hall flanked by two long, decorative wing corridors, is a masterpiece of Heian period architecture and is famously immortalized on the Japanese ten-yen coin.
