Hōryū-ji is a sprawling Buddhist temple complex in Nara Prefecture that contains the oldest surviving wooden buildings in the world. Its most recognizable feature is the five-story pagoda in the Western Precinct, which stands over thirty-two meters tall. Founded in six hundred seven by Prince Shōtoku, the temple was originally known as Ikaruga-dera. It has served as a central site for Buddhist study for more than thirteen centuries, surviving numerous earthquakes and typhoons through a dedicated cycle of dismantling and repair.
