Little Petra, or Siq al-Barid, is a narrow sandstone canyon roughly four hundred fifty meters long that functions as a smaller, northern suburb to the main city of Petra. The site is characterized by three widened open areas connected by the canyon, where Nabataean builders carved structures directly into the rock walls during the first century. The name Siq al-Barid translates to the cold canyon, reflecting the deep, shaded nature of the gorge that limits direct sunlight.
