Town Hall Square is a triangular open space in Vilnius defined by a striking, neoclassical building featuring a grand portico at its head. The square emerged in the late fourteenth century as a bustling marketplace following the city’s receipt of Magdeburg rights, which granted Vilnius the power of self-governance. For centuries, this area was the commercial and civic heart of the city, surrounded by merchant shops and serving as the site for public proclamations, theatrical performances, and the city’s municipal administration.
