Monte Albán is defined by its dramatic position atop an artificially flattened mountain ridge, rising thirteen hundred feet above the floor of the Oaxaca Valley. Established around five hundred BC, this site served as the primary Zapotec capital for over a millennium. Builders achieved this by leveling the mountaintop to create a sprawling Main Plaza, which is anchored by massive platforms at the north and south ends and surrounded by temple foundations and residential terraces.
