El Rey Archaeological Zone

landmark

El Rey Archaeological Zone consists of forty-seven stone structures, including plazas and a pyramid temple, arranged along a central linear avenue. These ruins sit within the Hotel Zone of Cancun, wedged between the Nichupté Lagoon and the Caribbean coastline. While the original Maya name for this settlement remains unknown, the site is called El Rey, meaning The King, in reference to an anthropomorphic stone sculpture discovered here in nineteen oh nine by travelers Channing Arnold and Frederick Frost.
