The Shwezigon Pagoda rises as a massive, gold-leaf-gilded bell shape above the plains of Nyaung-U. It is defined by its five square terraces and a core said to enshrine sacred relics, including a bone and tooth of Gautama Buddha. Since its completion in eleven hundred and two, this structure has served as the architectural prototype for countless stupas across Myanmar.
