Kopan Monastery sits atop a prominent hill north of the Boudhanath Stupa, identifiable by the golden roofs of its prayer halls that rise above the surrounding greenery of the Kathmandu Valley. It was established in nineteen sixty-nine when two Tibetan Buddhist teachers, Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, purchased the property from Nepal's royal astrologer.
