The Van Brienenoordbrug is defined by two enormous, parallel steel arches that span the Nieuwe Maas river. These arches serve as the centerpiece of a thirteen hundred and twenty meter long structure that carries the A sixteen motorway, the busiest highway in the Netherlands, across the water. The bridge supports twelve lanes of traffic and rises over an island in the river named Eiland van Brienenoord, which takes its title from a nineteenth-century baron who once owned the land.
