The Whakarewarewa Forest is defined by a towering six-hectare grove of Californian coastal redwoods that rise significantly higher than the surrounding forest canopy. These trees originated from a nineteen oh one government program designed to test whether exotic species could be harvested for lumber in New Zealand. While the project initially planted one hundred and seventy different types of trees across the area, the redwoods thrived in the region's rich volcanic soil and frequent rainfall.
