park garden

Victoria Park spreads across the lower slopes of the Port Hills above the Christchurch suburb of Cashmere, defined by its open grassy expanses that rise toward a backdrop of craggy volcanic ridges. First set aside as a quarry reserve in eighteen seventy, the land transitioned into a public recreation space by the eighteen eighties. It was formally opened on June twenty-second, eighteen ninety-seven, by William Rolleston to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
