Riccarton House and Bush

Riccarton House is a large, two-story homestead clad in beige weatherboards with maroon accents, framed by an ancient podocarp forest. It was commissioned by Jane Deans, who managed the estate after her husband John died in eighteen fifty-four. The house was built in three distinct stages between eighteen fifty-six and nineteen hundred, with the final additions designed by the firm England Brothers to accommodate the growing Deans family.
