Ilam Homestead

Ilam Homestead is a brick residence situated within the University of Canterbury campus, distinguished by the extensive, color-filled azalea and rhododendron gardens that wrap around its exterior. The original house on this site was built in the eighteen fifties by John Watts-Russell, a prominent early settler who named the property after his birthplace in Staffordshire, England. After the first homestead burned down in nineteen ten, Edgar Stead rebuilt the current structure in nineteen fourteen, ensuring the gardens remained a centerpiece of the estate.
