The Arrowtown Chinese Settlement consists of a cluster of low-slung stone and corrugated iron huts nestled on the banks of Bush Creek. Established in the eighteen sixties after the Otago Provincial Council invited Chinese miners from Victoria, Australia, to rework abandoned gold claims, this site once served as a segregated community on the outskirts of the main town. By eighteen eighty-five, the settlement had grown to include ten huts, a social hall, and stores to support the miners who faced significant social isolation and discrimination.
