The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is defined by its five minarets, which rise above the Muscat skyline to represent the five pillars of Islam. The tallest of these minarets reaches ninety meters, while the four surrounding it stand at forty-five and a half meters. Commissioned by Sultan Qaboos bin Said to commemorate the thirtieth year of his reign, the mosque was completed in two thousand one after six years of construction. It is built from three hundred thousand tons of Indian sandstone, giving the exterior its distinct, luminous finish.
