Longji Rice Terrace Scenic Spot

viewpoint

The Longji Rice Terraces are defined by tiers of earth and stone that wrap around steep mountain slopes, resembling the scales of a dragon as they climb toward the ridge lines. Known in English as the Dragon's Backbone, these fields were created by Zhuang and Yao farmers beginning in the Yuan Dynasty, roughly six hundred and fifty years ago. When these communities moved into the mountains, they found no flat valley floor for their rice, so they rebuilt the hillsides to suit their survival.
