Huaqing Palace sits at the base of Mount Li, distinguished by the steam rising from its ancient geothermal hot springs. For over three thousand years, emperors sought out these waters, but the site gained its most enduring fame during the Tang Dynasty. In the eighth century, Emperor Xuanzong constructed a lavish retreat here, where he spent winters indulging in the mineral-rich pools alongside his favorite concubine, Yang Guifei.
