Lingyin Temple, or the Temple of the Soul’s Retreat, is a sprawling complex of halls and pagodas distinguished by its vibrant yellow walls that stand out against the deep greens of the surrounding Wulin Mountains. Founded in three hundred twenty-eight by an Indian monk named Huili, the monastery is the oldest Buddhist temple in Hangzhou. Legend holds that Huili chose this site because he saw a mountain peak he believed had miraculously flown there from India overnight, a feature known today as Feilai Feng.
