The Canteras de sillar Añashuayco are defined by towering, vertical walls of pale volcanic rock that rise up to forty meters above the canyon floor. Located in the district of Cerro Colorado, these quarries are the source of the igneous stone known as sillar, which gives Arequipa its identity as the White City. This stone originated approximately one point sixty-five million years ago from explosive eruptions of a volcanic center that predates the nearby Chachani and Misti volcanoes.
