Cementerio Apacheta is defined by its vast collection of stone mounds, or apachetas, which reflect an ancient Andean practice of marking paths and giving thanks for safe arrival. Spanning over one hundred thirty thousand square meters, this is the oldest functioning cemetery in Arequipa. It was established in the nineteenth century when city officials sought to move burials away from urban churches to curb the spread of epidemics that had plagued the older Miraflores cemetery.
