The Plazoleta de la Almudena is defined by the imposing presence of the Cementerio General de la Almudena, the oldest cemetery in Cusco. Established between eighteen forty-six and eighteen fifty, the site was chosen by prefect José Medina to relocate burials that were previously held in the cellars of city churches. Beyond the cemetery walls, the square holds the church and convent of the Bethlehemites, a colonial-era religious complex that formerly operated as a hospital.
