Birth home of St. Martin de Porres

This house is marked by its bright interior patios and a diminutive chapel tucked away inside, standing in the heart of Lima as the birthplace of Saint Martin de Porres. Born here in fifteen seventy-nine to a Spanish nobleman and a freed slave from Panama, Martin spent his early years in this home before the poverty of his family pushed him into an apprenticeship with a local barber. He studied medicine and surgery during that time, skills he eventually turned toward the care of the city's sick and destitute.
