Nowa Huta is defined by its wide, radiating avenues and grand buildings designed in the style of socialist realism. Beginning in nineteen forty-nine, this planned city was constructed from scratch on former agricultural land to serve as a model industrial center for the Soviet-dominated Polish government. It was centered around the massive Lenin Steelworks, intended to provide a self-sufficient workers’ paradise that would counter the religious and intellectual influence of Kraków.
