Cabo da Roca is defined by its dramatic granite cliffs that plunge one hundred and forty meters into the Atlantic Ocean. As the westernmost point of mainland Europe, this windswept headland has been a nautical landmark since Roman times, when it was known as Promontorium Magnum. Today, visitors recognize the site by the twenty-two-meter red and white lighthouse, which began operation in seventeen seventy-two as the first purpose-built beacon on the Portuguese coast.
