Mercado da Ribeira

The Mercado da Ribeira is defined by a large, iron-framed structure topped with a distinctive oriental-style dome that rises over the Cais do Sodré waterfront. When the building opened on New Year’s Day in eighteen eighty-two, designed by engineer Frederico Ressano Garcia, it served as Lisbon’s primary wholesale market. Locals soon nicknamed the structure the Turnip Mosque, a name prompted by the grand, religious appearance of its dome above a place dedicated to the humble sale of vegetables.
