Iglesia de San José stands on the highest point of Old San Juan, recognizable by its sturdy stone walls and a facade that reflects centuries of architectural evolution. Originally founded in fifteen thirty-two as the Church of Santo Tomás de Aquino, it served as part of a Dominican monastery. The structure is one of the earliest examples of Spanish Gothic architecture in the Western Hemisphere, featuring rare vaulted ceilings built with Catalan design techniques.
