Feldioara Citadel sits on a high, rocky hill, identifiable by its elongated oval shape and four stone towers connected by heavy defensive walls. Built in the thirteenth century, it served as the headquarters for the Teutonic Knights, who arrived in the region to defend the border of the Hungarian Kingdom. The knights named the site Marienburg, or the Citadel of Saint Mary, after their order’s patron saint.
