The Fortified Church of Prejmer is defined by a massive, circular defensive wall that rises twelve to fourteen meters high, encircling a central church like a beehive built for war. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in the early thirteenth century, this site served as the primary defense for the local Saxon community against frequent invasions from the east. The thick stone enclosure protects a courtyard lined with two hundred and seventy-two individual rooms, each once assigned to a specific village family for storage and shelter during months-long sieges.
