Râșnov Fortress sits high on a rocky limestone hill, with thick stone walls that follow the natural slope of the ridge. Unlike the castles of nobility, this was a peasant refuge built to protect the entire community of the Râșnov region from invaders. Records from thirteen thirty-five describe it as one of the few places in the area to withstand a Tatar incursion, making it a reliable sanctuary where villagers retreated for weeks or months at a time, bringing their lives, homes, and livestock inside the defensive perimeter.
