The King Saud Mosque in Jeddah is recognizable by its expansive, sandy-hued facade and the series of domes that rise above the city, crowned by a prominent sixty-meter minaret. Completed in nineteen eighty-seven, the mosque is the largest in the city, covering an area of ninety-seven hundred square meters. It was designed by the Egyptian architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, who integrated traditional Islamic construction techniques, such as load-bearing brick walls and vaulted iwans, with modern design.
