Despot's Gate

The Despot's Gate is the most intact portion of the medieval Belgrade Fortress, recognizable as the primary entrance that once funneled travelers and soldiers into the Upper Town. Built in the first half of the fifteenth century, the structure consists of two distinct gates, originally designed with double ramparts to provide a layered defense against attackers. The inner gate features a defensive balcony, known as a masikula, positioned above the passage. Beneath this balcony, a small niche was carved into the stone to hold an icon of the protector of the city.
