Groot Constantia is identifiable by its long, white, gabled Cape Dutch manor house that sits against the backdrop of the Constantiaberg mountains. Established in sixteen eighty-five by Simon van der Stel, the commander and later governor of the Cape, it holds the distinction of being the oldest wine-producing farm in South Africa. Van der Stel chose the site for its fertile soil and remained its steward until his death in seventeen twelve.
