Sungnyemun Gate (Namdaemun)

Sungnyemun Gate, often called Namdaemun, stands as a heavy stone base topped by a two-story wooden pavilion with a hip-and-gable roof. As the primary southern gate of the original Seoul City Wall, it was completed in thirteen ninety-eight during the reign of King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon dynasty. The name signifies the Gate of Honoring Propriety, reflecting the Confucian values that shaped the capital’s design.
