Parc Natural de ses Salines is defined by vast, open salt ponds that shift in color between white, blue, and ochre depending on the light and the season. This landscape in southern Ibiza has been a center for salt extraction since Phoenicians first worked the area in six hundred B.C. The industry was once so profitable that the wealth generated by salt exports funded the construction of the defensive walls surrounding Dalt Vila, the historic center of Ibiza city.
