Roman city wall in Barcelona

The Roman wall of Barcelona is recognized by its massive, weathered stone blocks and the defensive towers that rise above the surrounding street level. Originally built to protect the Roman colony of Barcino, founded in the first century before Christ, these fortifications were significantly reinforced during the fourth century after incursions by Germanic tribes. At that time, the city was enclosed by a double wall, reaching up to eight meters in thickness and punctuated by dozens of tall, imposing watchtowers.
