Cripta de la Colònia Güell

landmark

The Cripta de la Colònia Güell is defined by its leaning columns and a rugged, earthy appearance that makes the building seem to emerge directly from the hillside. Located in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, this structure was intended to be the church for an industrial textile colony founded by the businessman Eusebi Güell. Antoni Gaudí began the commission in eighteen ninety-eight, but the project stopped in nineteen fourteen following Güell's death and financial difficulties. Only the lower nave and an entrance portico were ever completed, which led to the space being called a crypt, even though it is not actually underground.
