La Alcaicería is a maze of narrow, winding alleys characterized by intricate arches and low ceilings that distinguish it from the wider streets nearby. Originally founded in the fourteenth century under Muhammad the Fifth, it functioned as the city’s grand bazaar, a guarded commercial hub where merchants traded precious silks and spices. Its name reflects this legacy, as the term is often linked to the Arabic word for a commercial institution or to the Emperor Justinian, whose permission supposedly allowed the Moors to establish their silk trade.
