The Puerta de Elvira, or Gate of Elvira, stands today as a stone archway flanked by two rammed-earth towers topped with battlements. Built by the Zirid dynasty in the eleventh century, it served as the main ceremonial entrance to the city during the period of Muslim rule. Medieval travelers arrived here from the nearby settlement of Medina Elvira, passing through the gate to reach the heart of the capital.
