Ubik Café occupies a corner at Carrer del Literat Azorín thirteen, a space easily identified by its floor-to-ceiling shelves packed with books and a cluster of mismatched wooden furniture. Opened in December two thousand eight by three Italian expatriates, the shop took its name from a science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick. At the time of its founding, the concept of blending a bookstore with a café and cultural venue was unfamiliar to local administrators, who struggled to categorize a business that functioned simultaneously as a quiet workspace, a neighborhood library, and a lively bar.
