Kayman’s Gate Bell Tower is a solitary gray structure standing at the intersection of Main Street and Fourth Cross Street. It marks the site of what was once the eastern entrance to the Colombo Fort. The name derives from the Dutch word for crocodile, kaaiman, reflecting a time when the surrounding moat and the St. John’s canal attracted the reptiles to feed on kitchen waste discarded by residents of the fortified city.
