The Matter Vispa is a glacial river identifiable by its distinctive, milky-white hue, which comes from fine sediments ground down by the Gorner Glacier high in the Pennine Alps. It winds through the Mattertal valley, carving a path alongside the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn railway line that connects Zermatt to the town of Visp. This waterway originates where the Gornera and Zmuttbach streams converge at the edge of Zermatt, and it travels more than thirty kilometers through the valley before meeting the Saaser Vispa at Stalden.
