Schwarzsee

natural

Schwarzsee is a small alpine lake located at two thousand five hundred eighty-three meters, positioned directly beneath the Hörnli Ridge of the Matterhorn. Its waters are known for a deep, dark hue that often appears black, especially in the light of dawn and dusk. At the water's edge stands the small Chapel of Maria zum Schnee, or Our Lady of the Snows. The chapel originated from a promise made by two Zermatt locals who, after becoming hopelessly lost in thick fog on the Theodul Glacier, vowed to build a sanctuary if they were saved.
