Fort Montagu

historic

Fort Montagu sits on the eastern shore of Nassau Harbour, identifiable by its square limestone walls and the four cannons that now rest atop its ramparts. Built between seventeen forty-one and seventeen forty-two under the direction of military engineer Peter Henry Bruce, the structure was commissioned by Governor John Tinker to guard the eastern entrance of the harbor against Spanish invaders. It remains the oldest fort still standing on the island of New Providence.
